I pray all the fire fighters and residents of Lefors are safe tonight at hopefully back in their homes.
My daughter and I are on our way from Washington to Florida. We were heading towards Oklahoma City on I40 when the fires started on SR70. We were turned around because fires broke out on I40, and we were not able to continue on our route. Google maps gave us an alternate route which we started on, but pulled over because we weren't sure where it was taking us. Apparently we pulled off on a road that the Lefors Fire department had just put out a wild fire and a nice fire chief stopped by our car to see if he could help us. He explained there were several fires and really no way to get to Oklahoma City and offered to let us hang out at the fire station. We followed him to the station and as we pulled up he gave us new directions to get go I 40 which had been reopened, which when we got back on I 40 we were turned back around again, but after 2 hours found another route on country roads that got us above all the fires and back on I 40. It has been a very long 15 hours of driving, but nothing compared to families evacuated or stuck in the middle of the fires, unable to be evacuated. I just wanted to thank the fire chief who took the time during this disaster to offer my daughter and I a safe place to stay and other routes to Oklahoma.
